Famous K-Pop Artists USA

K-pop’s been on the rise for quite a while in the United States, but in 2020, we can safely say that the Korean Wave (‘Hallyu’) has taken over well and good. In 2012, when Psy’s Gangnam Style took the world by a storm, many thought this would be the time when K-pop would finally hit the mainstream market. However, while Psy’s foray into the western music scene didn’t last very long, the U.S. has seen a lot of other Korean acts that have made K-Pop a firm favorite of the music-loving audience in America.

Here are 5 of the famous K-pop artists in the United States:

1. G-DragonG-Dragon Pop Artists

G-Dragon first debuted as the leader of the South Korean boyband Big Bang, one of the best-selling boy groups in the world. Often dubbed as the king of K-pop, he was the second Korean solo artist (after Rain) to go on a world tour. His second EP, Kwon Ji Yong, debuted at the top of the Billboard World Albums chart in 2017 and became his third entry in the Billboard 200 charts. Act III: M.O.T.T.E. - his ensuing world tour was attended by over 650,000 people and became the largest concert tour ever conducted by a Korean solo artist.

2. CLCL Pop Artists

The reigning queens of K-pop, CL is perhaps one of the most famous female Korean soloists. Although she was born Korean, she spent much of her younger life in France and Japan. In 2019, she debuted as part of the girl group 2NE1 and, when the group went on a break six years later, she set off in pursuit of a solo career in the U.S. 2019 saw her winning The Most Inspiring Asian Woman at the People’s Choice Awards and she recently collabed with Beyoncé in a promo video for her Ivy Park x Adidas collection.

3. BTSBTS Pop Artists

No list of top Korean artists is complete without mentioning the current biggest boyband in the world, Bangtan Sonyeondan—or Beyond the Scene, as they go by in the U.S. BTS is made up of 7 members: RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. Recently, the band became the first South Korean act to perform at the Grammys in a collaborative stage with Lil Nas X, and the second after Psy to perform at Dick Clarke’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. They currently hold the record for the most weeks spent at No.1 on the Billboard Social 50 Chart at 164 weeks and have won the Top Social Artist Award at the BBMAs thrice in a row.

4. BlackpinkBlackpink Pop Artists

Unquestionably one of the biggest K-pop groups in the world, Blackpink has an immense presence in the U.S. The South Korean girl group is made up of 4 members - Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa - and has released hit songs like Whistle, Boombayah, and Kill This Love. The group was the first Korean girl group to perform at Coachella and recently won the Group of 2019, the Music Video of 2019, and the Tour of 2019 at the People’s Choice Awards. Blackpink also holds the record of the most subscribed Korean YouTube channel with 33 million subscribers.

5. SuperMSuperM Pop Artists

A newly debuted K-pop supergroup, SuperM contains some of the most experienced and well-known faces from popular groups of the K-pop industry. The 7-member group includes Taemin (from SHINee), Baekhyun and Kai (from EXO), Taeyong and Mark (from NCT 127), and Ten and Lucas (from WayV). The group is signed under SM Entertainment in Korea and Capitol Music Group in the U.S. Their EP debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart by the end of its first week of release. SuperM recently wrapped up their North America, Canada, and Mexico concerts, and will be moving onto the Europe leg in the latter part of February.

The artists we’ve mentioned here barely touch the surface of all the K-pop artists who’ve made their mark in the U.S. From solo artists like BoA and Amber Liu to groups like TWICE, GOT7, and ATEEZ, the audience for Korean artists in the U.S. is only growing. Which of these K-pop artists do you like? Any other you think should be included on our list?
